Sang Hyang – The Sacred Dance

The Sang Hyang dance is performaed by dancers in a state of trance to drive out evil spirit out from a village and the world. It is only performed during a series of sacred ceremonies. The dance is performed in two different versions. By female dancers, it is known as the Sang Hyang Dedari dance where a virgin girl dances beautifully within a chanting choir of female and male dancers. Sang Hyang Jaran, is a version performed by male dancers, which uses a rocking puppet horse. The dancer gallops through a series of fire lit in the centre using coconut fibers.
